Congratulations!! I am also amazed and in love with the image of the ancient writing board - the teacher's corrections in red ink, I mean ... in some ways not much has changed in 4,000 years.
This is fantastic! Congrats! I'm looking forward to getting your book.
I think I need to post this paragraph on my board for the reminders:
"The book I was writing wasn’t something that could be hurried into existence. Rather, it had to be lived with and through. We spent as much time talking about patience with the practice as we did the writing on the page. Though I was always writing something, I wasn’t always writing the book. A year or two might pass with no real progress. I had to contend with myself. Then over a period of weeks, I might churn out several pieces in quick succession—with editorial support—and marvel at how easy it all had been."
I just had "a year or two pass with no real progress", but recently actively reengaged with my memoir and whew, what a journey.
I love this. Thank you for sharing your guideposts and reminders. I am also always writing, for work, for play, for an anthology editing job (that means writing endless cat-herding emails) and need to consider what my guideposts should be after I cross this last one off my list. Congrats on the book; I'm looking forward to it. Love Univ. of Nebraska Press and everything they do. Well done!
Steve, how exciting! I am thrilled to hear about your forthcoming book and cannot wait to purchase it. I assume it is an essay collection? Also, you are very lucky to have a spouse who serves in the role of an editorial eye for you. I can't say the same is true in my household, but my husband is a hard science person (materials engineer) and spends a lot of time doing technical reports instead of creative writing. Thanks, too, for the reminder that finding the best stories within us take time.
The best stories take their time with us! That’s the truth! And yes—I’m so very lucky to have an in-house editor. She is the hero of the book (yes, a collection of personal essays) and it wouldn’t exist without her.
Congratulations on getting the manuscript done! I am truly looking forward to the book's publication.
I enjoyed reading about your wife's involvement with your work. I've known a number of writers over the years whose partners are also "in-house editors," yet this role is rarely so clearly and lovingly acknowledged as it is in your post. I'm currently the in-house editor for my husband's PhD thesis (on "The Esoteric Art of Fooling, Clowning, and Commedia"), and have really enjoyed being part of his creative process -- particularly as his work (as a theater performer/director) is so different than mine (as a writer/editor in the fantasy field). I also discuss my writing with him. This kind of creative support is so valuable, and deserves to be celebrated more.

I thought the same! Lol

And, hopefully not a new computer. If so, you will be distracted. All best.
